What is an Authenticator App?

An authenticator app is a tool used to generate time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) or passcodes, adding an extra layer of security to your online accounts. It is part of two-factor authentication (2FA), which requires users to provide two forms of verification to access their accounts. Typically, these two factors include something you know (like your password) and something you have (like a code generated by the authenticator app).

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Use the App

1. Install the App and Access the Dashboard

  • After installing the app, you’ll be directed to the dashboard screen where you can either:
    • Scan a QR code to add your account details, or
    • Manually enter the details.

2. Manually Enter Account Details

  • To enter details manually:
    • Enter the service name (e.g., Gmail, Facebook, etc.).
    • The service icon will be automatically recognized and displayed.
    • Enter the 2FA key provided by the service.
    • After entering the required information, click the “Add” button to save the details to the dashboard.

3. Authenticator View on the Dashboard

  • Once the details are saved, the authenticator code for that service will be displayed on the dashboard, as shown in the image below.

4. Edit Your 2FA Code

  • To make any changes, simply click the three dots (•••) next to the code you want to edit. This allows you to update the service name, 2FA key, or any other details.

5. Add New Accounts and Organize Codes

  • To add new accounts:
    • Click the FAB (Floating Action Button) to either scan a QR code or manually enter the details.
    • Additionally, you can create separate folders to organize your codes. This way, you can group your accounts and scan codes as needed.

6. Retrieve Backup Codes After Uninstalling the App

  • If you ever uninstall the app and need to retrieve your backup codes:
    • Simply toggle the iCloud sync option.
    • All your saved backup codes will be displayed for easy access.

7. Save and Manage Passwords

  • This app also allows you to securely save passwords for services such as Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Instagram, and more.
    • To save a password, enter the service name and account details.
    • Once saved, the password will be displayed on the dashboard.
    • To copy the password, simply click the copy icon, and it will be automatically copied to your device’s clipboard for easy use.
